Climate Kic Malta – Urban Challenge “Pitching Event“ December 17th 2019

This year, Malta hosted the first ever “Urban Challenge” event supported by the Climate KIC programme.

The Challenge for Malta was the “Zero to Landfill” challenge and it was owned by the Local Councils of the most urbanized areas of the Maltese Islands, namely the cities surrounding the harbour areas.

This programme is a challenge for Start-Ups, Enterprises, Scientists and Individuals with wide knowledge and expertise in sustainable waste collection on the Maltese Islands. Participants who offered plausible solutions to tackle the waste management of Maltese cities hailed from Cyprus, Germany, Italy, Bulgaria and Malta. After pitching their project ideas, winners will have financial and other relevant support for their pilot project, and the project will need to be replicable in other destinations.

The event was attended by representatives from the teams pitching, representations from Maltese Local Councils, local Private Enterprise and a Development Bank. Paragon Europe ‘s team responsible for Climate KIC and organization of this event, were also in attendance.

The Panel of Judges was composed of the Mayor of Ta’Xbiex, the Mayor of Cospicua represented by the Executive Secretary, the Mayor of Sliema, Director from Zar Malta, Director from Malta Development Bank. After carefully scrutinizing the pitches, the judges declared the team from Cyprus as winners.
